SAP Acquires Sybase
Breaking ERP news-SAP is acquiring Sybase for $5.8 million. Oracle, are you scared yet? Although it’s only speculation, SAP is said to have made the deal to compete with Oracle. The ERP giant Oracle grew its business after a $7.4 billion acquisition of Sun Microsystems last year. The  SAP-Sybase cash deal is expected to close during the third quarter of 2010.
Sybase is a California-based enterprise software and services company. Sybase was built to deliver enterprise and mobile infrastructure, development and integration software solutions. The ERP vendor’s product line directly competes with Oracle in providing data software to businesses.
SAP plans to leverage Sybase’s technology to connect SAP’s ERP software to Sybase’s mobile platform. SAP has had a rocky start to 2010, but hopefully the acquisition will bring the company some stability.
Through the partnership, users can access critical customer data from their mobile devices with Sybase’s business process mobilization platform. Sybase also enables professionals to access SAP’s CRM tools on-the-go.
“We are currently witnessing a proliferation of mobile devices that is transforming the way users interact with information and applications on a global basis,” said CEO of Sybase. “Our partnership with SAP combines the world’s most widely used business applications with a leading mobile middleware platform on the market today, bringing us one step closer to realizing our vision of the Unwired Enterprise.”
SAP and Sybase want to make the set of mobile applications available, wider and thereby increasing the value of customer investment in SAP applications. According to the SAP press release, Sybase will continue to operate as a standalone company under the name “Sybase, an SAP Company”, and the Sybase management team will continue to run the show. SAP recognized the importance of taking their ERP software mobile, and is using Sybase to facilitate the transition. We’re excited to see what software innovations the acquisition will bring.
