SOMERS, N.Y (July 13, 1998) – As reported in the August issue of PC Magazine, IBM’s(R) thin and light ThinkPad(R) notebook PCs are tops for travel. The sleek ThinkPad 600 reaches a new segment of customers wanting full-function notebook computing for the office or home, yet maintains a slim and light form. The classic ThinkPad 560 continues to capture the attention of road warriors who won’t sacrifice power and performance in a portable PC.
According to PC Magazine’s annual review of notebook PCs, the IBM ThinkPad 600 and ThinkPad 560X address the needs of specific types of road warriors. The ThinkPad 600 delivers high-end functionality, while the ThinkPad 560 is for users principally concerned with weight and battery life.
IBM ThinkPads are no stranger to the awards circle. Garnering more than 65 awards in 1997 alone — and more than 500 awards in five years — each model in the ThinkPad line delivers power, performance and mobility. The ThinkPad 600 burst out of the gate in April with an Honorable Mention in PC Magazine’s round up of Intel(R) Pentium(R) II mobile processor-based notebooks and went on to win ”Analyst’s Choice” in PC Week, Mobile Computing & Communications’ ”First Class Award,” and Windows’ ”WinList.” It also took first place in PC Today, winning its ”Top Pick Award,” Portable Computing Direct Shopper’s ”Lizzie Award,” PC/Computing’s ”A-List” (Desktop Replacement Category) and PC/Computing’s ”Five-Star Excellence Rating.”
The introduction of the first ThinkPad 560 helped define a new product category, the thin and light ultraportable notebook PC. Since its debut, the ThinkPad 560 has won numerous awards, from PC Magazine’s ”The Best of 1997,” ”Best Products of the Year,” and ”Editors’ Choice” to PC Computing’s ”1997 MVP Award” in the Lightweight Portable category and Home Office Computing’s ”1997 Editor’s Pick Award.”
”We’re thrilled that PC Magazine recognizes both the ThinkPad 600 and ThinkPad 560 as the top notebook PCs for road warriors available today,” said Adalio Sanchez, general manager, IBM ThinkPad. ”These prestigious awards — backed up by the outstanding sales of these models — demonstrate that businesses of all sizes are demanding the best combination of portability, performance and most importantly — usability.”
The sleek ThinkPad 600 leverages IBM’s unparalleled leadership in notebook PC design and engineering to anticipate, integrate and deliver on the future needs of mobile computing. Thin and light, the models weigh as little as 4.6 lbs.(1), are packaged in a slim 1.4” profile and are priced starting at $2,799(2). The PC Magazine Editors’ Choice model features a fast Pentium II 266MHz(3) mobile processor, a 13.3” TFT display, a spacious 4 gigabyte(GB)(4) hard disk drive, full docking capabilities and a convenient front-loading bay that accepts an optional CD-ROM or floppy disk drive.
The ThinkPad 560X is the latest addition to IBM’s award-winning ThinkPad 560 series of ultraportable notebook computers. The Editors’ Choice model is packed with high-performance features, including an Intel Pentium 233 MHz processor with MMX(TM) technology, a 12.1” TFT screen for crisp, clear images, 32MB of standard memory and a 4GB hard disk drive. Starting at just $1,999(2), the ThinkPad 560 series is designed for mobile professionals who need a light, fully-featured notebook computer.
