IBM SecureWay FirstSecure Safeguards e-businesses
Centrally Managed, Permissions-based System Delivers Comprehensive Security
RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C (October 27, 1999) – IBM today announced powerful new enhancements to its flagship e-business security software, SecureWay FirstSecure, an integrated security solution that now allows customers to identify and authorize user access easily from a central point.
IBM is one of the first vendors to offer a permissions-based security system that delivers strong authorization and authentication of users through a standard directory. The ability to provide this level of protection reduces the cost and complexity of implementing IT security across large enterprises.
IKON Office Solutions, Inc., one of the world’s leading office technology companies, relies on IBM SecureWay FirstSecure to protect its Web-enabled network, and is also reselling FirstSecure to its customers.
“In order to win in today’s marketplace, we’re going to have to prove the Internet is a secure place to work,” said Steve Harber, brand manager, IKON Technology Services. “And that’s why we’ve teamed with IBM and the FirstSecure product line. FirstSecure – the name says it all – it’s a security blanket.”
With today’s announcement, FirstSecure now provides a highly integrated offering that features a complete security solution for safeguarding business information. FirstSecure uniquely addresses a company’s entire infrastructure by protecting Web-based activities and client/server and host environments. Because FirstSecure is a comprehensive solution, based on industry standards, it enables maximum interoperability with other products.
In a 1998 PriceWaterhouseCoopers LLP survey of 1,600 IT professionals, 73 percent reported security breaches during the previous year, but fewer than one in five had a comprehensive security infrastructure in place.
“Without policy definition and enforcement, e-business security is at risk,” said Bob Madey, director, security business line management, IBM SecureWay. “FirstSecure helps our customers protect, detect and direct network traffic for a more secure e-business environment.”
FirstSecure includes: policy coordination technology gained from IBM’s recent acquisition of DASCOM, Inc.; Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) — the technology for issuing and managing digital certificates and highly secure encryption; boundary security; anti-virus; intrusion detection; and developer tools.
