IBM Provides Customers with Multi-Platform, Secure e-Business Solutions

IBM announces eNetwork Firewall for Windows NT and AIX

RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C (March 31, 1998) – IBM today announced its eNetwork Firewall Version 3.2 for Windows NT** and AIX*, offering customers comprehensive firewall solutions to support their e-business initiatives.
As a worldwide leader in firewall technology, IBM offers customers the most flexible method of Internet security by providing all three leading firewall architectures in one system — Application Proxies, Socks Circuit Gateway and Filtering architectures. These architectures work together to provide customers flexibility and optimal security, rather than depending on a single firewall architecture to satisfy their specific security requirements.
“Customers moving to an e-business model are betting their business on their IT infrastructure,” said Phyllis Byrne, vice president of Distributed Systems Services. “They, their customers and their suppliers all need to be assured that this infrastructure is safe and secure. The broader availability of eNetwork Firewall supports IBM’s drive to provide complete, secure network interoperability.”
The IBM eNetwork Firewall for Windows NT and AIX offers the following industry-leading features:
IBM eNetwork Firewall Windows NT
– First and only firewall to offer customers the Socks v5 security protocol standard. Socks v5 provides customers security support for User Datagram Protocol (UDP) applications such as net.meeting, RealAudio**, RealVideo**, plus provides real-time performance statistics — by both application and userid — and outbound authentication. IBM and Aventail Corporation are working together to deliver these capabilities.

– One of the first to provide a hardened operating system platform for the firewall, reducing configuration errors that can lead to security exposures and eliminating security holes and unneeded services.
IBM eNetwork Firewall for Windows NT and AIX
– The first company to provide a SecurID** protected firewall. IBM is including the Security Dynamics ACE/Server software and two SecurID** tokens, at no additional charge, to provide strong, two-factor user authentication. The tokens dynamically generate one-time passcodes to provide better security than traditional passwords. For example, strong authentication can be used to ensure that only authorized administrators update firewall configurations or for authenticated remote user access. This is one of the first actions resulting from the agreement announced in January between Security Dynamics and IBM.
– Offers native language support for eight translated languages, and the only one that includes French, Japanese, Korean, Traditional Chinese and Simplified Chinese, providing easier administration and lower support costs for customers worldwide.

“The quality and capabilities provided with the IBM eNetwork Firewall are consistent with IBM’s rigorous agenda to put out top products that offer complete e-business solutions. ” said Peder Jungck of Remington Associates, Ltd., an IBM Business Partner. “This solution offers customers enhanced security features, ease of use and complete functionality.”
With this product announcement, IBM Education and Training is adding an IBM eNetwork Firewall for Windows NT implementation workshop to the existing IBM eNetwork Firewall for AIX education. Available in April (call 1-800-IBM-TEACH), this workshop can be used towards certification on the IBM eNetwork Firewall for Windows NT.
In addition, an IBM Installation Service for Firewall is offered by IBM Global Services and certified IBM Business Partners. Complementary services are provided through the eNetwork Firewall Development Services team including release migration, customized development, and Virtual Private Network (VPN) consulting.
The IBM eNetwork Firewall V3.2 for Windows NT and AIX, part of the IBM SecureWay* family of security products and services, will be generally available in April 1998. Pricing for the new version begins at $2,499 for 25 users.
The IBM eNetwork Firewall for AIX is Firewall Certified by the International Computer Security Association (ICSA). The IBM eNetwork Firewall for Windows NT has been has been submitted for ICSA Firewall certification.
