IBM Invites ISVs to Road Test New Java Application Management Software

WASHINGTON, DC (August 19, 1998) – -IBM today invited enterprise Java developers to participate in pre-announcement testing and solution design for a new software product that simplifies Java application management.
The new software, code named Project Orion, will address the need for businesses to manage client applications from a server and control IT support costs. It will allow the server to act as the single point of access, administration and control for all applications deployed across a business. Using Secure Sockets Layer technology, Orion also will provide secure, single sign-on access to the Web.
“Orion will give companies the simplified control of Java applications they need to manage their clients and contain computing costs,” said Vic Nyman, brand manager, IBM eNetwork Software. “Rather than installing and updating applications on every user’s desktop, the IT staff will be able to make updates at the server and easily deploy them throughout the enterprise.”
IBM Business Partner Geac EnterpriseServer, a division of Geac Computers Inc., is a premier developer of enterprise mainframe business application software and services, and is the first ISV to develop applications using Orion. Geac recently began reengineering many of its applications to incorporate Java technology and — using Orion — making them easier to access and use.
“By incorporating Orion’s server-managed client capabilities, we’re making applications available to a much larger audience, both inside and outside an organization,” said Gerard Frey, vice president of marketing for Geac. “Applications are also much easier to install, maintain and update. Our customers will be able work more efficiently while their cost of doing business actually goes down.”
To participate in the Orion beta program, ISVs can register at www.ibm.com/java/ondemand. The software is expected to be formally announced in October.
Orion will support a variety of server platforms, initially including Microsoft Windows NT, IBM OS/2, AIX and OS/390. Pricing and availability will be announced at a later date.
