IBM Extends Network Offerings to Encompass Netfinity Server-to-Web Solutions

Increases Customer Savings And Simplifies Network Configurations for Web Hosting and Multi-site Connectivity

NEW YORK (April 15, 1998) – . IBM today announced “packaged” e-Business network solutions designed for Netfinity servers. These solutions are based on the products that delivered instantaneous data access during the Nagano Olympics. The introduction was made as part of the Netfinity e-tools for e-business launch.
Developed by IBM’s Networking Hardware Division (NHD) and available through distributors and value-added remarketers (VARs), the solutions feature IBM’s award-winning Netfinity servers, world-class 2210 Nways Multiprotocol routers and market-leading Lotus Domino Web software. Ideally suited for medium-sized and large enterprises, customers benefit from scaleable, high performance Internet access to Web hosting servers and secure, high-speed connectivity across local-area-network (LAN) boundaries.
“The question is no longer whether companies need to integrate e-business applications into their information systems initiatives: it’s now just a matter of how fast they can do it and which vendors make the best partners,” said Jose Garcia, Business Line Manager, Workgroup Networks Business Line, IBM Networking Hardware Division. “IBM is clearly one of the only companies in the world with the products, resources and expertise to deliver comprehensive, end-to-end network solutions. With today’s announcement, we’re making it easier and more cost effective for our customers to get new Web-based solutions up and running quickly, while also helping them to interconnect branch offices to critical corporate data.”
Many organizations want to manage or all of their Web hosting activities internally to support increased efforts and alleviate electronic bottlenecks. IBM’s Netfinity Networking Web Hosting solution addresses these Web hosting requirements simply and cost effectively. Included are IBM’s Netfinity servers, Lotus Domino Web software and 2210 Nways Multiprotocol routers with EtherJet 10/100 PCI or 16Mb Token Ring adapters, providing Ethernet and Token Ring customers with a ready-to-deploy e-Business solution. The IBM Netfinity Networking Web Hosting solution enables an organization to seamlessly extend its business reach electronically to the global community. And as an organization’s Web business grows, the IBM solution offers economical scalability with Olympic strength, load-balancing systems.
Linking branch offices and remote workers securely and reliably without jeopardizing existing network investments can be a challenge. IBM’s Netfinity Multi-Site Connectivity package is designed to handle mushrooming network traffic, easily tie together multiple locations, provide access to remote workers, and enable Internet access. By combining IBM’s Netfinity servers, 2210 Nways Multiprotocol routers and EtherJet 10/100 PCI or 16Mb Token Ring adapters, the IBM Netfinity Multi-Site Connectivity package delivers scaleable, high performance interconnectivity and reduces costs.
Additionally, IBM 2210 routers enable virtual private networks (VPNs) to provide secure access to protected data, such as e-mail or critical information, among multiple offices and remote users. A VPN represents an extension of a company’s private corporate intranet across a public network, such as the Internet, via a secure, private connection.
The IBM Netfinity Networking Web Hosting solution and the IBM Netfinity Multi-Site Connectivity solutions are available now through IBM distributors and VARs.
IBM’s Netfinity servers provide customers with the industry’s most reliable foundation for their networked businesses by delivering outstanding power, scalability, control and service. Based on industry-standard, Intel processor-based technology, the IBM Netfinity family of products enables small, medium and large companies to manage their networked business systems — from file and print capabilities to the most advanced PC applications — virtually anytime, anywhere.
IBM’s 2210 Nways(TM) Multiprotocol Routers provide a low-cost entry node with the power and versatility of a full-function, multiprotocol bridge/router. Offering an extensive range of connectivity, protocols and prices to allow companies to cost-effectively implement network computing across a range of remote locations, branch offices and regional sites, the 2210 is the industry’s first router to support the Layer 2 Tunneling Protocol (L2TP), ensuring among the highest levels of security for multiprotocol traffic across the Internet, intranets or extranets. Featuring routing and remote LAN access in the same low-cost package, the 2210 models use a common set of software functions called IBM Nways Multiprotocol Routing Services (MRS). Nways MRS is a member of IBM’s family of multiprotocol services products that provide the benefits of switching, distributed routing, bridging and virtual LANs.
IBM’s Lotus Domino is an applications and messaging server with an integrated set of services that enable companies to create secure, interactive business solutions for the Internet and corporate intranets. Domino delivers fast access to applications and data from any Web browser or Notes client. Customers can deploy secure e-business solutions that integrate legacy data and applications in just days. Its messaging capabilities include enterprise e-mail plus calendaring and scheduling. Domino can also build collaborative Web-based applications addressing critical functions such as customer service, human resources and sales automation. Domino automatically formats and publishes documents to the Web – dynamically creating HTML pages without requiring HTML or CGI coding.
