IBM Expands Operations in Singapore
Singapore (April 08, 1998) – IBM announces today that the first major technical support centre outside the U.S. will be launched in Singapore to support IBM’s Storage Systems Division (SSD) customers located in Asia.
The Technical Support Centre in Singapore was established to complement the existing technical support staff located in Rochester, Minnesota, USA. This centre will provide improved response and local support for IBM hard disk drives users in the Asia Pacific region in areas such as technical support, return material authorisation (RMA) assistance, warranty information, functional and interface specifications, and others. Currently, support for users in the Asia Pacific region is provided from the Rochester centre.
“The rapid implementation of leading-edge technology into IBM’s hard drives has given them higher capacity and reliability and better performance than the competition. The demand for and use of these IBM products in this region has increased dramatically over the past three years,” said Dave Ernsberger, vice president, worldwide hard disk drives marketing and sales. “A technical support centre in Singapore will offer customers in this key geographic region quicker response to having their problems addressed and resolved, ” he added.
The support centres are an integral part of SSD’s System Integration Test Laboratory, which is responsible for testing IBM hard disk drives to ensure they are compatible with nearly all major computer systems and standard operating systems.
As a supplier of hard drives to Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) and distributors worldwide, SSD maintains development laboratories and manufacturing facilities around the world, including manufacturing plants in Singapore, China and Thailand.
IBM plans to open a similar support centre in a Mandarin-speaking country in North Asia due to the significant growth of business in Taiwan, Hong Kong and China.
The highly trained personnel staffing the Singapore Technical Support Centre are backed by expertise from the laboratories in Rochester, and have ready access to global support database.
The new centre in Singapore is located in the SSD Singapore manufacturing plant site in Kaki Bukit Avenue 1. The operating hours are from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily from Monday to Friday. For assistance, call our Technical Support Centre at (65) 840-9292, or e-mail at HDDTECH@sg.ibm.com.
