Seybold Seminars, San Francisco (September 02, 1998) – .. New capabilities added to IBM’s one-to-one marketing solutions enhance the way publishers, printers and other companies create information that is as much as 100 percent customized to the individual recipient. This dynamic publishing solution can be directly linked to a company’s existing customer profile information, making it possible to automatically produce materials targeted to an individual’s wants and needs.
By reaching recipients with information that more precisely responds to their needs, companies implementing IBM’s dynamic publishing solution stand to increase revenue and reduce the costs of marketing and other information distribution activities.
IBM’s dynamic publishing solution is an example of how the corporation is addressing customer relationship management needs in the printing and publishing industries. Other IBM customer relationship management capabilities for publishers and printers, include call center support, business intelligence and customized print/Web delivery.
Using this dynamic publishing solution, businesses can use the same core content to create such products as brochures, magazines, or catalogs that are customized to an individual. The end-to-end solution uses modular components and open standards based on composition technology with unique intelligent template design tools.
Key components of the IBM dynamic publishing solution are:
IBM Intelligent Miner, a data mining technology that can be used to segment a company’s customer profile data base in such a way that individual customer preferences can be matched with specific marketing messages.
Bitstream’s PageFlex, a variable data composition client-server technology that creates customized collateral in real time for a target market of one. PageFlex is a high-end application built from modular components and open standards based on Bitstream’s NuDoc composition server with unique intelligent template design tools. PageFlex can import content from any ODBC-compliant database, and “pour” the content into “stretchable” hot spots of a document automatically reflowing the content and preserving the original layout to create dynamic or variable pages.
MediaBank, a digital asset management application for publishers that enables single or interacting workgroups within an enterprise to share content and files more productively. When PageFlex creates a document, it searches meta data in MediaBank and pulls the information for use in a document. Users can search for, browse, archive, purge, review, revise, track and audit files and content, including images, text, fonts, illustrations, movies, sound files and documents. MediaBank is owned by Inso Corporation and made available to IBM by Bitstream.
IBM Printing Systems Company digital printing technologies, including: InfoPrint 4000, a 600-dot-per-inch (dpi) resolution, high quality, high speed black and white production printer; InfoColor 70 and InfoPrint Color 100, high-quality color production printers; InfoPrint 60, a 600 dpi, cut sheet, duplex printer; InfoPrint Manager print management software.
PageFlex is integrated with InfoPrint Manager print management software and print-on-demand digital printing technologies. Traditional digital print bottlenecks are significantly reduced through InfoPrint Manager’s unique variable data handling capability. InfoPrint Manager adds fax and e-mail capabilities as output device choices.
“Integrating these leading digital technologies demonstrates IBM’s commitment to advancing the capabilities of publishers and other corporations to implement robust one-to-one marketing programs,” said Peter R. O’Sullivan, director, publishing, IBM Global Telecommunications and Media Industries. “The IBM dynamic publishing solution is representative of IBM’s commitment to deliver the hardware, software and services that make publishers more competitive and help them transform their businesse into e-businesses.”
IBM corporate marketing is currently beta testing the dynamic publishing solution for potential use in producing and distributing customized IBM sales collateral.
