Federated Department Stores Teams With IBM to Launch Macys.com in Time for the Holiday Shopping Season

World Class Technology Supports Macy’s e-business Powerhouse

Somers, N.Y (November 18, 1998) – . Macys.com, an IBM e-business solution, announced today its new Web site is open and ready for business. IBM, the technology partner of Federated Department Stores, created the site and is providing the hardware, software and services that bring to the Web more than 250,000 apparel and gift items found in the Macy’s department stores.
The site, located at http://www.macys.com, was designed to mirror a traditional Macy’s department store, enabling shoppers who don’t live near a Macy’s store to enjoy the same wide selection via the Internet. Customers will also be able to use the leading-edge solutions developed by IBM exclusively for macys.com including gift and product search wizards as well as a more personalized shopping experience.
“Enabling Macy’s to become an e-business is an important milestone in the retail industry,” said Karl Salnoske, General Manager, Electronic Commerce, IBM Software Solutions. “IBM’s e-business solution will help Macy’s extend its reach to consumers who have never had access to a Macy’s store and is a showcase for the type of results a customer can expect from IBM.”
The end-to-end e-business solution was developed by IBM’s Interactive and New Media Solutions unit. Designed to be easily navigated for maximum customer satisfaction, the macys.com solution includes the following IBM products and services:
