Fact Sheet: e-Chemicals Creates Web-based Supply Chain to Speed Purchasing of Branded Industrial Chemicals
IBM Net.Commerce & IBM RS/6000 Provide Security, Scalability, and Functionality
N/A (December 01, 1998) – e-Chemicals, a provider of branded industrial chemicals on the Web, is partnering with IBM, Yellow Freight and SunTrust Banks, Inc. to create a powerful channel that allows knowledgeable buyers of chemicals to order them quickly and easily over the Internet. From its Web site, e-Chemicals can now easily and cost effectively sell name brand products from leading chemical manufacturers including Dupont and Elf Atochem, along with nine other global chemical suppliers.
As a result buyers of chemicals, such as industrial manufacturers and Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) can easily purchase smaller quantities of chemicals for applications ranging from paints and coatings to electronics. By offering low prices in an easy-to-use, online venue, the e-Chemicals Web site provides a unique combination of value, convenience, efficiency and reliability to its customers.
“Our mission is to provide the most cost-effective and efficient channel for delivering industrial chemicals through leveraging advancements in electronic commerce, logistics and Web-enabled processes,” said Alf Sherk, president, e-Chemicals. “Our partnership with IBM is a valuable cornerstone in our value chain because it allows us to leverage the security demanded by our customers with a tightly integrated, scalable solution.”
IBM co-constructed and hosts e-Chemical’s commerce-enabled Web site, which is electronically linked with Yellow Freight to provide cost-effective logistics services and reliable deliveries. SunTrust Banks, Inc., also connected to the Web site, processes e-Chemicals’ credit, collections and accounts receivable.
The e-Chemicals e-business solution consists of IBM software, hardware and services including IBM’s commerce server software, IBM Net.Commerce, and Lotus Domino on a RS/6000 platform. e-Chemicals chose IBM Net.Commerce over other solutions because IBM understood their target markets and offered the security their customers demanded. IBM Net.Commerce enables customers to search the catalog, obtain product and pricing information, place an order, view their order history and track pending orders.
e-Chemicals worked directly with IBM Global Services to co-construct the site and install the RS/6000 server platform, which is hosted by IBM Global Network Services in Schaumburg, Illinois.
