Editors Note on the enabling technology:
Delivering information over the Internet to a mobile phone or other wireless hand-held device has the considerable challenge of sending and presenting data in a way that makes it useable on a wireless telephone screen and other hand-held devices. Converting the existing data and applications on Delta’s Web site into the appropriate format for these new devices requires new software and services to filter and adapt content. To address this challenge, IBM and Modem
Media are working with Delta and its subsidiary Delta Technology to write a Java application to translate Delta’s travel information into eXtensible Markup Language (XML). The team is using IBM’s transcoding technology to filter and adapt content on the fly to a form more suitable for handheld devices. IBM is also providing consulting and systems integration services and Java application development tools (VisualAge Java).
