Borland Brings High-Productivity Java Development To The AS/400 With JBuilder/400 Client/Server Suite

Borland Announces Worldwide Marketing Relationship with IBM: Trial Version of JBuilder/400 to be Included with Each New Copy of OS/400

SAN FRANCISCO (February 17, 1998) – Borland International, Inc. (NASDAQ: BORL) and IBM today announced a joint worldwide marketing relationship around Borland’s new Java development tool for the AS/400 platform, JBuilder/400 Client/Server Suite. The announcement was made in conjunction with IBM’s release of the new version of the AS/400 operating system, OS/400 V4R2, and its Java virtual machine. As part of the agreement, a 90-day trial version of JBuilder/400 will be included with every new AS/400 and OS upgrade shipped by IBM. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
JBuilder/400 made its formal debut at this week’s IBM Business Partner Executive Conference (BPEC) being held at San Francisco’s Moscone convention center, booth #AS-25. Qualified customers can also receive a trial version of JBuilder/400 by registering on the Borland/400 website at http://www.borland.com/borland400/ .
“We are very excited about our new Java partnership with Borland International, one of the world’s leading application development tool providers,” said Tom Jarosh, IBM’s general manager, AS/400 brand. “Borland’s JBuilder/400 Client/Server Suite integrates our AS/400 Toolbox for Java and demonstrates an early, significant example of AS/400 acceptance as a robust, scalable Java server.”
“Borland shares IBM’s vision for E-business by offering corporations the visual development tools and distributed middleware for building and managing enterprise Information Networks,” said Zack Urlocker, Borland’s vice president of marketing. “IBM’s AS/400 division has made a strong endorsement of Java as the future platform for programming the AS/400. JBuilder/400 provides an ideal environment for corporate AS/400 developers interested in learning and quickly producing reliable, pure Java applications for the AS/400.”
Borland JBuilder is a family of highly-productive, visual development tools for creating high-performance, platform-independent applications using the Java programming language. JBuilder’s scalable, component-based environment is designed for all levels of Information Network development projects ranging from applets and applications that require networked database connectivity to client/server and enterprise-wide, distributed multi-tier systems.
The JBuilder product family features fast and easy JavaBeans component creation, a scalable database architecture, robust visual development tools, and the ability to produce 100% Pure Java platform-independent applications, applets and JavaBeans. The product’s open environment supports 100% Pure Java, JDK 1.1, JavaBeans, JFC, CORBA, RMI, JDBC, and all major corporate database servers.
JBuilder/400 Client/Server Suite
JBuilder/400 seamlessly integrates the IBM AS/400 Toolbox for Java with the JBuilder environment. This combination provides pure Java JDBC access to AS/400 data and Java access to all native AS/400 services — such as Record Level Access, SQL access, DataQueues, API Program calls, Command Calls, and IFS. JBuilder/400 Client/Server Suite also includes additional AS/400-specific features and Wizards to assist corporate AS/400 developers to learn Java quickly and start developing sophisticated, pure Java applications for the AS/400.
Applications developed with JBuilder/400 can run on any client that supports a JDK 1.1-compliant virtual machine, on the AS/400 server (V4R2 or later), and can be partitioned between client and server, without compromising security or data integrity.
“JBuilder and the AS/400 make a very powerful combination,” said Michael Lopez, product/project manager for CYFA Data Systems, an AS/400 consulting firm based in Babylon, New York. “Borland has a tradition of providing high-quality, superior visual development tools. IBM’s support for JBuilder shows a serious commitment to Java development for the AS/400.”

JBuilder and the IBM San Francisco Project
Borland and IBM have also been working together on a joint R&D effort to improve enterprise-wide Java development through the integration of JBuilder with IBM’s San Francisco project. As part of this combined effort, the companies have been building visual tools, Wizards and object-oriented components to optimize learning and productivity as it relates to San Francisco. To reach this goal, Borland and IBM plan to install JBuilder at IBM San Francisco education centers worldwide.
“Borland’s JBuilder engineers have been working closely with IBM’s San Francisco team to help provide a blueprint for enterprise-wide Java development,” said Thomas Torf, Borland’s director of strategic sales. “Both companies have been very pleased with the results from integrating JBuilder’s tools with the San Francisco codebase and the value it will bring to corporate Java developers.”
