IBM Ships New Workstations with Latest Performance Enhancing Technologies
NEW YORK (April 15, 1998) – Continuing its commitment to offer industry-leading Windows** NT workstations, IBM* today announced the powerful new IntelliStation* M Pro professional workstation. The new IntelliStation is capable of running up to two Intel*** Pentium*** II microprocessors at 400 MHz (1), while supporting up to 100 MHz ECC SDRAM at capacities up to 1GB (2). It is the first IBM workstation to feature Intel’s new 440 BX chip set, which supports front side bus operations at 100MHz and AGP (accelerated graphics port) 2X graphics.

1The new IBM IntelliStation M Pro features three industry-leading 2D and 3D graphics accelerators. The Matrox Millennium II AGP accelerator with 8 MB of frame memory delivers outstanding 2D performance at high resolutions and true color. The enhanced Permedia 2 graphics engine with 8 MB of flexible allocation memory delivers solid 2D performance and the best 3D price performance available. Advanced 3D solid modeling or animation capabilities are delivered with the Intergraph Intense 3D Pro 3400 graphics accelerator with 16 MB of texture memory. For extreme 3D users, the Intergraph Intense 3400GA Lighting and Geometry accelerator allows the IntelliStaion M Pro to achieve industry-leading performance for a Windows NT based workstation.
LEADING-EDGE HARD DRIVE TECHNOLOGY
The new IBM IntelliStation M Pro is the first workstation in the world to use hard disk drives with giant magnetoresistive (GMR) head technology. No bigger than the head of a pin, the GMR head is the most sensitive sensor for reading computer data on hard drive products, making storage-intensive multimedia business and entertainment programs come to life on the IntelliStation with television-like picture and sound quality.
The new IntelliStation M Pro can be configured with a choice of 7200 rpm and 10,000 rpm disk drives ranging in capacity from 6.4 GB to 18.2 GB. The total disk storage capacity of the IntelliStation M Pro is over 63 GB.
ENHANCED APPLICATIONS PERFORMANCE
The new IntelliStation M Pro was designed to deliver fast application performance, and delivers industry leading scores on benchmarks such as BAPCo, Bench97, and ViewPerf. The new IBM IntelliStation M Pro has been tested and supported by over 100 application vendors representing mechanical design and engineering, electrical design, financial services, software engineering, geographical mapping systems and digital media content creation applications.
ADVANCED MANAGEABILITY and INVESTMENT PROTECTION
IBM has added several new manageability and security features to the new IntelliStation M Pro to help our customers manage and protect their investments. IBM’s Asset ID* (3), Alert on LAN*, SMART Reaction* and LANClient Control Manager* (LCCM) 2.0, are technologies designed to help customers deploy and keep track of their inventories, monitor system outages and/or tampering, perform automatic data backup before a hardware failure occurs and remotely manage their systems. The result of these manageability features for IntelliStation customers is a system that allows them to focus more of their attention on their applications and running their business, and less on running their network.
PRICING
The new IBM IntelliStation M Pro is available today, and estimated reseller prices start as low as $3,750 (4) (without monitor) depending on model and configuration. IBM’s aggressive pricing for the new IBM IntelliStation M Pro is a result of the increased efficiencies IBM is achieving under its Advanced Fulfillment Initiative (AFI). Designed to streamline operations and reduce costs, AFI is built around the IBM Authorized Assembler Program and includes such initiatives as products being designed for quick assembly in the channel, resellers co-locating operations at IBM facilities and parts suppliers shipping directly to IBM resellers.
IBM also announced new gray Professional Series monitors today which complement the new IBM IntelliStation workstations. IBM provides a complete family of TFT flat panel monitors as well as general and professional monitors ranging in CRT sizes up to 21″ (with viewable image sizes of up to 19.8″) that meets the highest quality and testing standards in the industry.
