Tivoli Management Agent Shipping on IBM Desktops, Notebooks

“Tivoli-Ready” PCs Ease Management for IT Staff

AUSTIN, Texas (April 15, 1998) – Tivoli Systems Inc., the world’s leader in network, systems and applications management, today announced the Tivoli Management Agent will become integrated into IBM’s Personal Systems Group Universal Management offerings. Customers will now have automatic, native access to all of Tivoli’s extensive management capabilities with additional complementary functions being shipped with all new IBM PCs, ThinkPads and NetFinity servers. Via a simple icon click, these systems will self-configure and install the Tivoli Management Agent putting Tivoli’s systems management functions in place. This will allow Tivoli and IBM customers to quickly and easily realize the benefits and savings of a well-managed environment.
”This is yet another step in fulfilling our pledge to make systems management easier,” said Jan Lindelow, CEO and President of Tivoli Systems Inc. ”Our goal is to have the Tivoli Management Agent broadly available so customers can automatically realize the benefits we bring to simplifying desktop management. Ideally, customers will install the Tivoli Management Agent on a single server to manage thousands of client nodes. IBM will include the Tivoli Management Agent in their Universal Management offerings and ship it with all of their PC 300 desktop computers, ThinkPad notebooks and Netfinity servers to extend Tivoli’s reach to millions of industry-standard PCs.”
”We are pleased to provide native support for Tivoli Management Software and still offer universal management support for other management tools that our customers may use,” said Judy Smolski, general manager, customer-integrated offerings, IBM Personal Systems Group. ”IBM’s Universal Management solutions are non-proprietary, industry-standard solutions with added management capabilities that leverage Tivoli and other systems management offerings.”
Today’s agreement combines Tivoli’s strengths in enterprise management with IBM’s global reach in the personal computer market. Customers gain the rich benefits of the Tivoli Management Agent and the ability to perform management operations such as software distribution, inventory, user administration and distributed monitoring. Instead of software applications sitting atop the desktop, the Tivoli Management Agent automatically determines what is needed to perform a given management operation. If that capability already resides more on the PC, it immediately proceeds with the operation. If not, the Tivoli Management Agent downloads the appropriate software from the server to the desktop with no operator intervention. In addition, the Tivoli Management Agent downloads newer versions as updates are loaded on the server. Customers gain significant productivity advances with these management features because Tivoli Management Software is installed only once on the server with updates performed automatically thereafter.
The Tivoli Management Agent also is available through 3Com’s Network Interface Card (NIC) DynamicAccess software that reaches nearly 1.5 million desktops per month.
This agreement strengthens Tivoli’s promise to reduce deployment time and lower total cost of ownership (TCO) of PCs by automatically installing agents on millions of desktops and mobile computers. Tivoli has long recognized that customers greatest concern is reaching the millions of desktops and servers in their environment.
Specifically, the Tivoli Management Agent can be found on all IBM PC 300s, including GL, PL and IntelliStation; and on all new desktop and ThinkPad hardware. IBM offers support for the agent on Windows 95 and Windows NT 4.0 systems.
