Industrys First Object Relational Database for IBM Enterprise Servers

SAN FRANCISCO (May 12, 1998) – IBM, pioneer of the relational database, today introduced the newest member of the award-winning DB2* family — DB2 Universal Database for OS/390* — at the 10th annual International DB2 Users Group (IDUG) North American conference here.
DB2 Universal Database offers customers of all sizes the power, flexibility and reliability they need for today’s e-business and business intelligence applications. IBM also announced a beta program for DB2 Universal Database for OS/390, an enhanced version which will include improved Java** support and access to multimedia data types such as image, text , audio and video. OS/390 is the flagship operating system for the IBM S/390* Parallel Enterprise servers.
“Databases are the foundation for virtually all businesses today, and are the heart of today’s e-business and business intelligence applications,” said Janet Perna, general manager, data management, IBM Software Solutions. “For our large users, DB2 for OS/390 offers unmatched performance with a low cost of ownership. Today’s announcement underscores IBM’s commitment to giving all of our customers — from small businesses to large enterprises — easier and faster access to all of their business data, anywhere in the enterprise, from any location.”
DB2 Universal Database gives customers the flexibility and functionality they require to run every aspect of their business, from e-business, to enterprise resource planning to analyzing mountains of data with on-line analytical processing (OLAP). DB2’s high availability and reliability make it ideal for Internet and mission-critical applications that require around-the-clock access to data. Common management tools, widespread partner support and multi-platform accessibility make DB2 Universal Database an easy-to-use solution that will scale seamlessly as a business grows.
High demand for power-hungry applications such as large data warehouses is helping to fuel significant growth for DB2 for OS/390. The County of San Mateo (Ca.) recently purchased the 9000th license for applications that will provide timely access to information for more than 100 probation officers. “Our goal is to establish a highly reliable environment for both Internet and intranet applications that can utilize the processing power of DB2 on the mainframe,” said Bill Marion, information services, County of San Mateo. “We expect the new features such as improved Java support, coming in the next version of DB2 for OS/390, will help us achieve our goals.”
