IBM
St (May 16, 1998) – As the Information Technology Supplier to the World Golf Village, IBM is giving new meaning to golf links by playing an integral role in connecting golf enthusiasts worldwide to the World Golf Village in St. Augustine, Florida, which opens to the public on May 19, 1998.
IBM is combining its expertise in e-business and multimedia technology solutions to deliver a compelling, interactive experience for fans — whether they visit the Village itself or via cyberspace on the Internet.
Representing a unique collaboration of the world’s major golf organizations, World Golf Village creates an environment that celebrates the history, tradition and values of the sport, while providing an entertaining and educational experience for visitors from around the world.
IBM’s sponsorship of World Golf Village includes the development of four key applications and provision of the computer hardware, software and systems integration skills to run them:
The World Golf Village Web site at http://www.wgv.com;
The Global Golf Center, an interactive exhibit providing up-to-the minute, worldwide tournament results;
The World Golf Hall of Fame Inductee Directory, offering rich, multimedia profiles of the 74 Hall of Fame inductees, and a wealth of golf information at the push of a button;
The World Golf Village Information Center, a series of touch-screen kiosks highlighting current activities within the Village and allowing participants in the Commemorative Brick Program to locate their personalized bricks on the Village’s Walk of Champions.
Golf lovers who want to stay in touch with the leaders, discover what makes great golfers great, book a conference or explore the new Slammer and the Squire golf course can do all of these via cyberspace on the Web at http://www.wgv.com.
The site, which went live on December 15, 1997, is following a phased roll out with new features and content being added monthly.
Over time, visitors will be able to shop on-line, view video clips and listen to sound bites from golf’s greatest heroes and moments. Visitors to the site today will find information about:
The World Golf Hall of Fame Museum and its key exhibits;
World-class golf, recreation, shopping, hotel, convention facilities and real estate opportunities available in the World Golf Village community;
How to participate in the World Golf Village tradition;
Links to all participating golf organizations;
Facts and photos chronicling the design and construction of the facility.
IBM interactive media consultants designed and developed the official World Golf Village Web site, which is hosted on the IBM Global Network.
IBM has been a leader in the Internet since this technology began and is dedicated to helping customers and developers leverage the value of the Internet and e-business. The World Golf Village Web site, intranet and multimedia technologies were designed, created and are powered by IBM.
