IBM Delivers Significant New Ethernet Family of Products for Companies of All Sizes
RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C (June 09, 1998) – IBM today announced an expansion to the Ethernet networking product family. This announcement reconfirms IBM’s commitment to developing Ethernet solutions for businesses of all sizes. IBM’s new Ethernet products include desktop and stackable hubs and switches for small to medium-sized businesses and workgroups for enterprise environments, along with modular, high-performance routeswitches for enterprise customers. These newly developed IBM products provide a cohesive, flexible migration path and investment protection for customers as their network grows.
“It is crucial for companies deploying e-business solutions to have a strong portfolio of IBM networking products to choose from,” said Jose Garcia, business line manager, workgroup networks, IBM’s Networking Hardware Division. “With the release of these new Ethernet solutions, that are specifically developed for small to medium businesses and workgroups, IBM is offering affordable products that allow network growth — providing a low cost of ownership while delivering maximum return-on-investment.”
“This announcement also underscores IBM’s commitment to develop comprehensive, cost-effective enterprise solutions that support critical e-business expansion efforts,” said Bob Greenberg, business line manager, enterprise networks, Networking Hardware Division. “Enterprise network managers are faced with increasing demands to expand their networks in order to accommodate growing communities of users and external partners, and we’re delivering the products they need to implement these changes.”
IBM-Developed Ethernet Solutions for Small to Medium Businesses and Workgroups
Representing a strengthened commitment to Ethernet solutions, these series of products are built to be easy to configure with a low cost of ownership. The products include a family of 10BASE-T Ethernet desktop switches, 10/100 stackable hubs and 10Mbps desktop hubs.
The IBM Ethernet Desktop Switch 8275 uniquely provides eleven 10BASE-T Ethernet ports and two 10/100BASE-TX ports, with all ports supporting half and full duplex while providing maximum flexibility in configuring the switch. The 8275 supports Web management and RMON, and also features high-speed connectivity options to servers and network backbones, giving customers an economical migration path for future growth. In addition, the IBM Nways Manager supports the 8275 including Java-based remote access management capabilities.
The IBM 10/100 Ethernet Stackable Hub 8245 is a family of 10/100 hubs that provide a manageable, flexible and economical solution for connecting 10/100 Ethernet shared media networks and workstations. The 8245 provides additional bandwidth by enabling customers to deploy 10MB and 100MB simultaneously. Available in 12 or 24 ports, managed or manageable hubs, the 8245 supports autosensing with up to 144 ports in a stack, SNMP and RMON management and intrusion prevention. In addition, the IBM Nways Manager supports the 8245 including Java-based remote access management capabilities.
The IBM Ethernet Desktop Hub 8242 family of 10MB products is an ideal solution for the small/medium business looking for an economical way to provide connectivity to the desktop. Available in 8 or 16 port models, the 8242 supports true plug-and- play installation, making it an easy and cost-effective way for users to build their networks.
Ethernet RouteSwitch Solutions for Workgroups and Enterprises
The IBM 8274 Nways LAN RouteSwitch is a reliable switching powerhouse for the backbone or workgroup environment. Providing a flexible, modular platform for any-to-any networking, the 8274 supports Ethernet, Fast Ethernet, Token Ring, FDDI, ATM, CDDI and Frame Relay. With a comprehensive range of LAN to ATM switching capabilities, customers can deploy the 8274 to migrate their network at their own pace by inserting new modules in an existing switch chassis. The 8274 is capable of routing up to 220,000 packets per second and supports policy-based VLANs, IP and IPX routing, FDDI trunking, ATM private virtual circuits, ATM LAN Emulation, Multiprotocol Encapsulation over ATM, Classical IP over ATM and graphical network management on a broad set of standard management platforms.
The IBM 8277 Nways Ethernet RouteSwitch is a high function, affordable switch that can be deployed either as a workgroup switch or edge device. The 8277 10/100 BASE-T auto-sensing Ethernet switch provides 24 ports with an additional slot to support copper or fiber Fast Ethernet and/or 155Mbps ATM
