NEW YORK (June 16, 1998) – IBM(a) today announced the new IntelliStation(a) E Pro, a high performance, lower-profile Windows NT(b) workstation designed to meet the needs of customers who require fast 2D and entry-level 3D graphics.
The IntelliStation E Pro is well suited for customers’ applications in finance, software engineering, desktop publishing, database development, 2D design and drafting, architecture, electronic design analysis and web site creation. The IBM IntelliStation E Pro extends the reach of the IBM IntelliStation line from traditional workstation users to new business users, by delivering workstation-class performance, at new levels of affordability.
”Our new Reuters Plus system, which offers an attractive and flexible user interface to a generous array of third-party information sources, combined with a powerful real-time news and data package, works extremely well on the IBM IntelliStation E Pro” said Graham Albutt, executive vice president and chief information officer, Reuters America Holdings Inc. ”This is why we have chosen to make most of our US sales and marketing presentations for this important new Reuters product using the new IBM IntelliStation.”
The IBM IntelliStation E Pro is powered by either a 350 or 400 MHz (1) Intel Pentium(c) II microprocessor, 100 MHz ECC SDRAM, Intel’s latest 440 BX chip set with AGP (accelerated graphics port) and 100 MHz front side bus. The IntelliStation E Pro offers, 7200 rpm, 4.5 GB (2) Ultra-wide SCSI or 6.4 GB EIDE hard drives, and a 32X CD-ROM (3). The IntelliStation E Pro is available in either 2D or 3D configurations. For 2D users, the system is configured with a Matrox Millennium II AGP graphics accelerator with 8 MB WRAM, while for 3D users, the IntelliStation E Pro utilizes the 8 MB SGRAM Permedia 2A AGP graphics accelerator. The new IntelliStation E Pro also provides multiple 2D display support with either Matrox or Appian J Pro graphics.
”Our IntelliStation line provides industry leading application performance for all mainstream and high-end workstation users,” said Dr. Satish Gupta, general manager, IBM Professional Workstation products. ”The new E Pro provides an unmatched entry-level workstation platform and demonstrates our commitment to providing IBM IntelliStations that meet the needs of every type of NT workstation user.”
”We are extremely excited about the new IntelliStation E Pro,” said Michael G. Pesta IV, director of MIS, Burt Hill, Kosar, Rittelmann, Associates. ”As architects we expect a system that is well designed in both form and function — the E Pro fits the bill. In addition, the IntelliStation E Pro easily outpaced the competition in the benchmarks we ran.”
Manageability
The IBM IntelliStation E Pro is the first workstation in IBM’s cross-brand Universal Management initiative, a standards-based set of hardware and software instruments with value-added plug-ins specifically designed to help customers better deploy, manage, and protect their investments. The cornerstone of Universal Management is the Universal Management Agent (UMA), a standards-based framework that seamlessly integrates advanced management capabilities into heterogeneous environments (IBM and non-IBM systems). UMA operates both as a robust stand-alone application, or can natively plug into the customer’s enterprise management console of choice — such as Microsoft’s SMS, IBM’s Tivoli or Computer Associate’s Unicenter.
As with the rest of the IntelliStation line, the E Pro comes standard with an array of manageability features designed to keep workstations up and running. IBM’s Wake on LAN(a), Alert on LAN(a) and LanClient Control Manager(a) (LCCM(a)) allow for remote systems administration. Newer technologies include Asset ID(a)(4), designed to help customers deploy and keep track of their inventories, and SMART Reaction(a) software which can be set up to automatically back up critical data in the event of hard drive failure. The E Pro is also shipped with Intel’s LANDesk(c) and IBM Netfinity(a) software, and is DMI 2.0 compliant.
