IBM Advances e-business Strategy with Solutions Based on Java

Announces New Software for Deploying Web Applications

New York (October 07, 1998) – IBM today announced new solutions based on Java** that are designed to help customers exploit the power of network computing for e-business while leveraging their current IT investments.
Included in IBM’s announcements made at Internet World, is software that makes it easier for customers to deploy and use Web applications across an enterprise. IBM also announced a joint development agreement with Sun Microsystems to create a new framework based on Java technology that will make it easier to build compelling, platform-independent e-business applications using rich media.
e-business uses the power of network computing to transform internal business processes, business relationships, and the buying and selling of goods, services and information. Java technology helps information flow more freely through an enterprise and lets customers leverage core business information to create powerful e-business applications.

Our approach, supported through technologies such as Java, also lets customers more rapidly deploy a new generation of applications that exploit the Web.”
In addition to delivering solutions based on Java technology, IBM also is delivering e-business solutions using industry standards such as XML, SET***, EDI, Open EDI, PKI, OBI****, Gold and OTP, to name a few.
Today’s announcement highlights include:
eNetwork On-Demand Server*
IBM eNetwork On-Demand Server is new software for deploying and managing Java applications across an enterprise. On-Demand Server simplifies administration and management of Java applications by controlling a variety of clients from a single server.
On-Demand Server supports a variety of server platforms, initially including Microsoft Windows NT**, IBM OS/2*, AIX and OS/390*. On-Demand Server runs on any Web browser client with a current version of a Java Virtual Machine. It also supports a variety of client Web servers, including Lotus Domino Go Webserver*, which was recently renamed IBM HTTP Services*, Microsoft Internet Information Server**, and Netscape Enterprise Server**.
