IBM Extends Market Lead in Flat Panel Monitors with New 18-Inch Display At Breakthrough Price

Research Triangle Park, NC (November 09, 1998) – IBM today announced two 18.1-inch(1) active matrix Thin Film Transistor (TFT) flat panel monitors. With an estimated reseller price starting at $2,849(2), the new T85 flat panel monitor sets another breakthrough price point in the industry for comparably-sized TFT monitors.
“This new 18.1-inch flat panel monitor enhances our current portfolio with its aggressive price and improved performance features, offering tremendous value to our customers,” said Alan Petersburg, worldwide brand manager, IBM Visual Products, Personal Systems Group. “The early customer feedback that we’ve received on its technology, picture quality, and innovative design has been extremely enthusiastic.”
Exceptional Viewing Experience, Space-Saving Features
The T85 continues the momentum and excitement generated by the IBM T55 15-inch flat panel introduced earlier this year. Like other IBM flat panel displays, the T85 offers several advantages over Cathode Ray Tube (CRT) monitors. It requires approximately 75% less space, about one third the power, and generates significantly less heat than its CRT equivalent. The T85 offers a 48% larger viewing area over the T55 model and 67% more pixels. With its space-saving, low-heat and low-emissions features, it is ideal for professionals in corporate environments and executives in home office or growing business settings requiring access to large amounts of information. It will be especially popular with customers desiring higher performance from their desktop display for high end graphics, CAD, engineering, scientific, and medical applications, financial, manufacturing and call center markets.
The new flat panel monitor also features a wider viewing angle, complementing IBM’s recently announced T55 15″ flat panel monitor. With a sleek, industrial design and a 160ox160o expansive viewing angle, it supports display modes in SXGA, XGA, VGA, or SVGA, and delivers an optimum image resolution of 1280 x 1024 with up to 16.7 million color combinations. The T85 will automatically synch into a wide range of industry standard modes sent from the system’s compatible graphics subsystem (within the addressability bandwidth of the monitor).
The analog model (T85A) offers dual video inputs with 15-pin D Sub and 13W3 connections allowing the attachment of two systems. The digital model (T85D) features the new Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA) standard Plug and Display (P&D) digital graphic interface.
Available in Pearl White and Black, the new T85 18.1-inch flat panel monitor is designed to complement IBM’s line of commercial desktop PCs, IntelliStation workstations, and the new Aptiva SE7.
Both models feature a detachable, tilt and swivel base for easy viewing adjustment. Users can also accessorize the T85 with many options such as alternative mounting solutions (wall or swing-arm), audio, touchscreen, and USB (Universal Serial Bus).
