IBM Expands Open-standards Leadership with Enterprise JavaBean Support Availability
Additional product support for Enterprise JavaBeans reinforces IBM’s commitment to Java
NEW YORK, NY (December 09, 1998) – IBM today announced the availability of Enterprise JavaBean** support for both its Web application server and application development products to help customers more easily build Web applications.
IBM is providing Enterprise JavaBean support in its WebSphere* product line and its VisualAge* application development products. WebSphere is part of IBM’s family of software products that support business applications from simple Web publishing through enterprise-scale transaction processing. IBM’s VisualAge application development products enable customers to rapidly build enterprise Web applications.
The server-based Enterprise JavaBean technology makes it easier for software developers to build and deploy applications that run on a variety of computing platforms. Using this technology, companies can create e-business applications with Java**, without having to modify their existing systems.
Enterprise JavaBeans technology is a key part of IBM’s overall strategy for providing open solutions that integrate with existing environments to build scaleable, secure applications for conducting transactions across a wide variety of platforms.
“IBM is one of the first software vendors to offer a comprehensive range of Enterprise JavaBean support,” said Alfred Spector general manager, Marketing and Strategy, IBM Application and Integration Middleware. “Through the WebSphere Application Server product line and the enterprise tooling support of VisualAge development environments, our customers will be able to easily create, manage and deploy e-business applications across heterogeneous platforms.”
WebSphere Application Server and Enterprise JavaBean Technology
The Advanced Edition of the WebSphere Application Server line provides an open, standards-based, Web server deployment platform. Building on the capabilities of WebSphere Standard Edition, Advanced 2.0 includes an enhanced server that provides Enterprise JavaBean support along with the reliability necessary for customers to deploy and manage the next generation of transactional, e-business applications.
Integrated Enterprise JavaBean support is now available for VisualAge for Java, the award-winning Java programming environment for building Web-enabled enterprise applications. The combination of WebSphere Application Server, Advanced Edition and VisualAge for Java enables customers to efficiently create, test and deploy transactional e-business applications that can be scaled as business needs demand.
In addition, IBM also announced the availability of WebSphere Application Server, Standard Edition 2.0, providing customers with an enhanced version of its open, multi-platform, standards-based, Web server deployment platform. This edition includes the new IBM HTTP Services, based on the Apache Web server.
VisualAge for Java and Enterprise JavaBeans Technology
VisualAge for Java provides developers with an easy-to-use development environment for building industry-standard Java applications and significantly simplifies the process of creating Enterprise JavaBean components. VisualAge for Java also delivers the industry’s most advanced Enterprise JavaBean, Java servlet and Java Server Page** testing environment. It provides seamless integration between VisualAge and WebSphere, allowing developers to incrementally develop and debug their business logic without leaving the development environment. This tighter integration reduces the time to market for building e-business applications.
CareerPath.com, based in Los Angeles, CA, has been using IBM’s WebSphere Application Server and VisualAge for Java to update and redesign their career management Web site. “Using IBM’s WebSphere product line and Visual Age for Java, allows us to easily build, deploy and manage Java servlets, Java Server Pages and JavaBeans in a cross-platform environment. Because these IBM products utilize industry standards, including Java, we also have the opportunity to evaluate other deployment options and add additional functionality to our career management Web site,” said Dr. Marco Papa, Chief Technology Officer, CareerPath.com. “We’re looking forward to the enhanced integration and support for Enterprise JavaBeans components provided in the new versions of the products.”
The Enterprise and Enterprise JavaBeans Technology
IBM has adopted the Enterprise JavaBean model, across IBM’s product line, to deliver productivity and flexibility to customers who are building sophisticated Web applications. This unified component model is also embraced by Lotus for customers who want to combine the power of Domino* with WebSphere. Lotus Domino will be able to call on Enterprise JavaBean technology to perform modular business functions in enterprise systems. By combining the sophisticated workflow management and collaborative capabilities of Domino with the robust transactional business logic of Enterprise JavaBean technology running in WebSphere, IBM is making it easier for customers to build, run and manage the new generation of e-business applications, using tools and platforms that best meet their business needs.
Adding to IBM’s support for Enterprise JavaBean technology across the WebSphere Product line, NetObjects Fusion**, a key part of the WebSphere Studio, supports the Enterprise JavaBeans technology, to allow both sophisticated IT developers, as well as mainstream Web site builders, to access enterprise data and applications.
Since IBM was a major contributor to the Enterprise JavaBean specification, customers can expect IBM solutions, from simple software offerings to the highest-end, enterprise-strength server systems, to support the standard in 1999. IBM currently has more than 3,000 employees working on Java.
